Picture Helps Adolescent Child
Sometimes it’s the little things we take for granted that make a big difference in a child’s life. It is often said, “a picture paints a thousand words.” Everyone has their own idea what this statement means to them but do you ever wonder what it would mean to someone that had never seen a picture of themselves?
In my various careers, I was fortunate enough to have the privilege of working with adolescent children. Let me clarify this: emotionally disturbed adolescent children. The pay was terrible, the hours were horrible but the rewards are ever lasting.
We were always trying to find another approach to work with the children at the center. Sometimes it would be another activity or experience. One of the other counselors and I had some previous experience with photography (both photographing and developing). We put a proposal together to teach an elective in photography from beginning to end. It was accepted and we began our course. Towards the completion of the course, we had quite a collection of black & white photography. We put a collage of these photos together and put them on display.
Among the photos was the photo of John (name changed for privacy). He was on one of our horses in our therapeutic horseback riding program. John was beaming from ear to ear.
With all of our photos, John’s picture didn’t stand out that much to me. The next day after the display went up, John’s therapist came up to me and commented about that particular picture. Now, 16 or 17 years later, that is the only picture I can still see vividly in my mind from the entire display. If a therapist ask you if you could print another copy of a photo of their 11 year old client because the child had never seen or had a photo of themselves before, You Remember That Picture!
This article isn’t about John and it isn’t about pictures. It is about asking you to become a Humanitarian Ambassador. It’s about reaching out to children like John and giving them a precious gift. I could share story after story after story after story of something so slight that touched a child’s life while working with these children. You could remember something so slight that someone did for you that reached down and touched you with such joy and kindness. We have children all over the world that need our help.
